Dr. Eileen Natuzzi is a retired general and trauma surgeon and has worked on health capacity building in the Solomon Islands for over 20 years. She received her medical degree from George Washington University, did her surgical training at the University of California San Francisco and obtained her Masters in Public Health in Epidemiology from San Diego State University. She is a member of the Australia New Zealand Gastrointestinal International Training Association (ANZGITA), and has assisted in establishing an endoscopy training partnership with the doctors and nurses at the National Referral Hospital on Guadalcanal. She currently works with Solomon Island health care professionals advising them on their research and is a visiting staff member at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara, Guadalcanal.
Dr Natuzzi is a volunteer consultant to the Pacific Islands Health Officers Association (PIHOA) focusing on medical readiness in the US Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPIs) in the event of mass casualties from kinetic warfare. Dr. Natuzzi’s main focus is on strong health systems as a deterrent to armed conflict and in responding to extreme weather events in urban Pacific Island environments. The PIHOA project promotes workforce training, establishing a Pacific trauma systems and strengthening health system infrastructure a means to reduce risk and harms from external and endemic threats.
Dr. Natuzzi has published a number of papers on health and climate change in
Solomon Islands as well as editorials on issues pertinent to geopolitical events in The Hill, The
Diplomat, DevPolicy, Griffith University’s Pacific Outlook and Global Health Governance in
addition to publishing in medical journals.
