Walsh School of Foreign Service

Why CANZPS

The Center for Australian, New Zealand and Pacific Studies (CANZPS) is part of the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. The Center was established in August 1995 with funding from the Governments of Australia and New Zealand. That support continues and has been bolstered by an endowment grant of A million from the Government of Australia, and in 2019 the Government of New Zealand committed NZ$ 1 million to the endowment.

CANZPS offers a program of courses about Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific in such disciplines as history, government, international affairs, sociology, literature, and fine arts. Instruction is by Georgetown faculty members and adjunct faculty from the United States and overseas. Georgetown is the only university in North America that offers an undergraduate Certificate Program in Australian and New Zealand Studies.

CANZPS also has an extensive outreach program of lectures, conferences and meetings each semester, many of which are organized jointly with other elements of the University, with the Australian and New Zealand Embassies, or with organizations such as the East-West Center.

For students who wish to gain first-hand experience of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, overseas study options are available through Georgetown’s Office of Global Education.
