Dr. Jim Chalmers, MP
Member for Rankin, Treasurer of Australia
Jim Chalmers MP is the Treasurer of Australia and has been the Member for Rankin since September 2013. After his first election, he was immediately promoted to Shadow Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Trade and Investment. He was also the Deputy Chair of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Tax and Revenue, a member of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics, and a member of the Australian Labor Party’s National Policy Forum.
While in Opposition, Dr. Chalmers has served as the Shadow Minister for Financial Services and Superannuation, Shadow Minister for Sport and the Shadow Assistant Minister for Trade, Investment, and Productivity.
Dr. Chalmers was previously the Executive Director of the Chifley Research Centre and, before that, Chief of Staff to the Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer. He has a Ph.D. in political science and international relations from the Australian National University and a first-class honors degree in public policy from Griffith University. His first book Glory Daze was published in July 2013 and he has contributed to a number of scholarly publications and other media. His main policy interests are the economy, education and foreign affairs.
