The research team’s findings will make a major investment in the next generation of leaders as the project will train a cohort of graduate students with a strong understanding of present and future geo-political challenges facing small states.
Six young researchers will be granted research funding that can be used for either Masters, Doctorate, or post-doc studies on topics within this project, two based at the University of Iceland, two at Vilnius University and two at Georgetown University.
Research grants for young researchers
The project Small States and the New Security Environment, housed at the Centre for Small State Studies at the University of Iceland was recently awarded a grant from NATO. The project is a preparedness initiative examining the defence and foreign policy choices and challenges of small states in NATO and its partner small states in Eastern Europe, MENA, and Oceania in the new security environment. Three partner universities (University of Iceland, Vilnius University and Georgetown University) now issue a call for applications for six research grants for young researchers (two grants at each university). The researchers can be MA, PhD or Post-doc level. Each grant is 12.000 Euros (paid in US dollar equivalent) to be divided in three payments over the grant period from 1 September 2017 through 31 December 2019. The research projects should be combined with studies or research at the universities in the field of international affairs, small state studies or similar fields.
Further information about the project can be found on the homepage of the project.
The recipients of the grants will be expected to participate in a conference in Reykjavík in June/July 2018 and contribute to a book project, where the main conclusions from the project will be published.
Applications should contain the following information:
1) Project idea (short description including how the research proposal relates to the overall project)
2) Letter of interest
