This event will be moderated by Dr. Alan Tidwell, Director of the Center for Australian, New Zealand, and Pacific Studies at Georgetown University.
Dr. Rebecca “Bec” Strating is the director of International Relations, Convenor of the International Studies Major in the B.A., a lecturer in Politics in the Department of Politics and Philosophy at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia
Her current research is in the areas of Australian politics and foreign policy, small states and maritime disputes in the Indo-Pacific. In 2018, she was awarded the prestigious Boyer Prize by the Australian Institute of International Affairs for the best article published in the Australian Journal of International Affairs in 2017 for her paper ‘Timor-Leste’s Foreign Policy Approach to the Timor Sea: Pipeline or Pipedream?’ She is currently co-editing a special edition of Australian Journal of Politics and History on ‘East Asia’s Contested Security Order’ to be published in 2019.
Her second book, The Post-Colonial Security Dilemma: Timor-Leste and the International Community, will be published in 2018 with the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. She has also published in well-regarded journals such as Australian Journal of International Affairs, Asian Security, Journal of Current Southeast Asia, Journal of Pacific History, Southeast Asian Affairs 2017 and Contemporary Southeast Asia, with an article forthcoming in Australian Journal of Politics and History in October 2018.
Dr. Strating is a 2019 Asian Studies Visiting Fellow at the East-West Center in Washington DC, where her research focuses on defending the rules-based maritime order.
